I teach children with autism, and there is a wide variation in their comfort levels in terms of being touched. Some like deep pressure - one of my students loves to hug and be hugged; he comes to me many times a day and asks for a "squeeze." Another likes to have gentle pressure on his head, and he will put an adult's hands on his head to get us to do this for him. Some of my students like other types of tactile stimulation - for example, light and gentle "tickles" on their arms. I also have an adult nephew with autism, and he loves to have his mother hug him.

People with autism are all individuals, with different responses to sensory stimulation.

autism in movies

Here's a list of movies that contain autistic characters. The list doesn't include those television shows and the list is not complete. We only choose the top 10 movies which are highly recommended by parents or public. Most of the actors or actresses did a remarkable job of portraying autistic people. However, there's also some confusion. It is said that Oscar-winner Kate Winslet is going to narrate a documentary that tells a heartbreaking story about a mother and her son with autism; the film is called "The Sunshine Boy".

1. Rain Man
Actors: Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Valeria Golino

Rain Man took Academy honors for best director, screenplay, picture and actor (Dustin Hoffman) in 1988. The story is very touching; it's between two brothers, an autistic one played by Dustin Hoffman who inherits 3 million dollars from their father, and the other one is a car dealer who's not close to them. They went to a cross-country journey after their father's death and get to know each other.

This movie is deep-moving, extremely touching, a lot of people's favorite. It's a story about family loyalty, sadness and the power of love. The most shining character of this drama is a retarded boy played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Arnie. Depp and DiCapro have a wonderful chemistry together.

6. Mercury Rising

Thriller Movie. There's some really frightening moments in the movie, but nothing too bloody. A boy with autism who is fascinated with crime on TV, is suspected as a killer responsible for a series of murders occur in the neighborhood. The end of the movie is surprising.

ciri-ciri autisme

Autism is a spectrum disorder. Behavioral symptoms or characteristics for autism can be present from mild to severe. We often hear terms or labels used to describe our loved ones, like autistic, autistic-like, high-functioning or low-functioning.

The important point to remember is our loved ones with autism can learn, make progress and may grow up to function productively with an appropriate education, benefits, supports and services.

Below is a list of common characteristics for autism that both children and adults may show in any combination, level or degree of severity. Read more on the characteristics for autism and how to recognize the signs of autism in young children.

A person with autism usually has problems interacting with people in the following ways:

•may avoid or lack eye-contact,
•may not imitate others,
•may not point or use other hand gestures,
•may prefer to be alone, and
•may not understand social cues.

A person with autism will usually have problems communicating, such as:

•may not speak at all,
•may be severely language delayed,
•may have unusual or odd speech patterns (repeat words and phrases heard by others, i.e. tv or videos,
•may be unable to initiate or engage in a conversation,
•may be unable to use their imagination during play i.e. pretending a banana is a telephone).

An individual with autism may show restricted, repetitive, or ritualistic behaviors, interests, and activities, for example:

•may be preoccupied with a narrow range of interest (i.e. dinosaurs, astronomy, trains or roller coasters,
•may insist on sameness (i.e. prefer certain clothing or eating only certain foods,
•may line up their toys or objects,
•may flap their hands, or make odd hand and body gestures,
•may spin or like to spin objects,
•may rock themselves,
•may be self-injurious i.e. head banging,
•may anger easily or show aggression,
•may be resistance to change,
•may become angry or upset if their daily routine changes in any way, and
•may focus on only a small part of a toy or object).

How is autism defined?

Autism is defined by having a certain set of the behaviors or characteristics for autism listed above. Early intervention is the key to a better life or prognosis. Autism is usually diagnosed around 18 months of age using a screening tool known as the CHAT or Checklist for Autism in Toddlers developed by Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Cambridge.
